(Iowa) A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. this evening for portions of west central, central, southern, and southwest Iowa.
Heat index values could reach 105 degrees. While temperatures may not reach that level every day, the combination of prolonged heat, high humidity, and limited overnight relief has prompted the multi-day advisory.
Hot temperatures and high humidity may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for east central and southeast Iowa, with Heat Indexes ranging from 100 to 110 degrees.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms when possible, avoid prolonged time in the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.
Those who must be outside should take extra precautions, including wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours.
Officials also advise taking action if symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke develop.
