Iowa Judge Upholds Decision To Remove Libertarian Gubernatorial Candidate From Ballot
(Des Moines, IA) — A Polk County judge is ruling that a Libertarian candidate for governor cannot be on the November election ballot. Nicholas Gluba and his running mate Jules Cutler were disqualified by the three-member Iowa State Objections Panel last month over improperly filed paperwork. The judge agreed with the panel’s finding that Cutler failed to file a signed affidavit, though she claims the Secretary of State’s office told her she didn’t need one. The panel is made up of three Republicans after the lone Democrat, Rob Sand, withdrew because he, too, is running for governor.
Defense Attorneys In Okland Murder Case Seek Extension
(Adel, IA) — Lawyers for the woman accused of shooting and killing an Iowa woman 15 years ago want the judge to wait for more evidence before deciding if the case will be dismissed. Kristin Ramsey’s attorneys want an August pre-trial conference delayed and the judge to rule on whether to dismiss the case after hearing testimony from investigators. Defense attorneys claim the witness changed her story several times while her 2026 police interview and phone calls weren’t recorded. Ramsey is accused in the 2011 murder of realtor Ashley Okland during an open house at a West Des Moines townhouse. Prosecutors say the witness in the case is consistent and credible. Ramsey is on house arrest at her Woodward home.
Several Blood Types Down to 1-2 Day Supply, LifeServe Says
(Des Moines, IA) — Blood donations continue to decline as several blood types reach critically low levels across the region. LifeServe Blood Center says both national and local blood supplies are dangerously low, raising concerns that hospitals may not have enough blood available for patients if donations do not increase. According to the blood center, Type O-negative, O-positive, and A-negative blood currently have only a one-to-two-day supply on hand. Other blood types are at a two-to-three-day supply. LifeServe provides blood to more than 175 hospitals across Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Illinois.
Iowa Department of Education Awards Therapeutic Classroom Grants
(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa Department of Education is awarding over two million dollars in grants for therapeutic classrooms in 10 school districts. The grants will go toward establishing classrooms for students with behavior or emotional needs that require a different learning environment than a traditional classroom. The school districts receiving grant funds will establish 19 new therapeutic classrooms and youth mental health services in 15 Iowa counties.
Training Exercises Being Held At 132nd Wing In Des Moines
(Des Moines, IA) — Don’t be alarmed if you see protesters, emergency vehicles and law enforcement at the Air National Guard Base in Des Moines. The 132nd Wing is conducting readiness exercises that include simulated protests, loudspeaker announcements, and the presence of law enforcement. The Guard says these activities are part of a planned exercise and not an actual emergency. The training will last through Sunday, August 3rd.
