(Atlantic) Atlantic Head Softball Coach Terry Hinzmann is stepping down after 18 seasons leading the Trojan softball program.
Hinzmann took over the program in 2009 and compiled an impressive career record of 414-264.
Coach Hinzmann says his coaching career began in 1979, and becoming Atlantic’s head softball coach in 2009 was another memorable chapter.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Under Hinzmann’s leadership, Atlantic became one of the area’s most consistent winning programs. In his fourth season, the Trojans reached the regional finals for the first time, beginning a stretch that included 10 regional final appearances. Atlantic also qualified for the Iowa State Softball Tournament in 2016, 2018, and 2021, finishing seventh in 2016 and fifth in 2018. Hinzmann’s teams also captured four conference championships during his tenure.
Hinzmann says one of the greatest rewards of coaching has been hearing from former players long after their playing days ended.
He says the decision to retire is bittersweet, but there are plenty of items left on his bucket list. Hinzmann says he’s healthy and looking forward to spending more time with his wife, his new grandson, and the rest of his family.
Hinzmann says he wanted to announce his retirement early enough to give the school district ample time to post the position and conduct a thorough coaching search. He hopes he’ll be remembered as a coach who helped student-athletes learn how to overcome adversity, both on and off the field.
