(Oakland, IA) — The Riverside boys soccer team is in a rebuilding year. New Head Coach Teresa Applegate admitted as much after a season opening 15-0 loss to Logan Magnolia. The Bulldogs only dressed 10 players in that game and Applegate has hopes that number will go up when other players become available. Her goal is to work on the fundamentals and look for improvement
Applegate has been involved in soccer for 38 years — she played soccer at St. Albert, then at Briar Cliff, and did some coaching in Sloan, IA. She took a break from the sport but has been involved in the youth level in Oakland and is on the board for the Southwest Iowa Soccer League. When Riverside needed a varsity head coach, she jumped at the chance to make sure the school still had a team.
So far this season, Applegate says she is leaning on her three seniors — Keegan Allensworth, Drake Anderson and Dalton Schechinger. She says there are a few players who have the ability to score goals
One problem says that Applegate says that they have no experience at goal keeper
AHSTW is sending its athletes to play soccer at Riverside but Applegate says that number is down to one — Anderson — from originally five.
Riverside’s second game is Friday at Harlan.
