(Red Oak) Montgomery County Engineer Karen Albert provided an update on several county bridge projects during the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday morning.
Albert reported on the low-water crossing project on 210th Street, west of L Avenue. She noted that Nelson and Rock Contracting, based in Onawa, has removed the old bridge and will begin driving sheet piling today. The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors opened sealed bids for the project on January 20. Six construction firms submitted bids to replace the bridge, which has been closed for a year. Nelson and Rock Contracting submitted the lowest bid at $101,277.50.
Albert also provided updates on two BNSF Railway bridge projects at L and Q Avenues. A. M. Cohron and Sons will mobilize equipment for the projects, with machinery arriving at the Q Avenue site on April 6 and the L Avenue site on April 20. She added that landowners and local schools have been notified about the closures of the Q Avenue railroad bridge and the Erickson Wildlife area.
In December, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors approved A. M. Cohron and Sons’ low bid of $4,738,468.89 for the projects. All bids came in below the estimated construction cost of approximately $6.3 million.
Additionally, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors approved a shared maintenance road agreement with Mills County. Karen Albert says this is nothing new.
During committee reports, District 5 Supervisor Alex Burton shared highlights from a recent SWIPCO meeting. Burton noted his amazement at the distance SWIPCO buses travel each month. The latest report showed that SWIPCO vehicles logged 152,000 miles and provided 41,494 rides, helping many people reach their destinations efficiently.
