(Indianola, IA) — Atlantic Girls and Treynor Boys both had a top five finish at the Simpson High School Classic on Tuesday as the outdoor track and field season kicked off on a wonderful night at Simpson College.
The Trojan girls finished in 5th place in the team standings and the biggest highlight was the 100 meter dash where Atlantic finished 1 and 2. Lila Wiederstein was first with a time of 13.22 seconds and Stellah Van Aernam was hot on her heels at 13.24 seconds. Fiona Mulligan of 4A school Urbandale was close behind in third place at 13.28. It is early in the season but Widerstein’s time currently ranks Tied for 15th in the state and Van Aernam is 17th.
Van Aernam was also 3rd in the 200 (27.03) and Widerstein was 4th in the 400 (1:06.14) and 5th in the long jump (16–03.00). Ximena Mendez-Cordereo was 6th in the 800 (2:40.71); Gabrielle Engler 6th in the 3000 (12:24.28); Olivia Olson 7th in the discus (95-09); Jayci Reed 7th in the 100 hurdles (17.27); and Adler Bruce was 8th in the 100 hurdles (17.64).
The 4×100 relay with Van Aernam, Reed, Braeleigh Hass and Weiderstein finished 3rd at 51.39 — Gilbert won at 50.41 and West Des Moines Valley was 2nd at 50.61. The Distance Medley Relay finished 4th (4:42.48) with Emma Meyer, Taylee Hagen, Mendez-Cordero and Katrina Williams.
Final girls standings were Indianola in first with 167; WDM Valley 2nd with 126; Gilbert 3rd with 112; Urbandale 4th at 72 and the Trojans rounded out the top five with 61.
Treynor’s boys finished 4th at Simpson with Indianola sweeping the team standings, the boys earned 205 points. Valley 2nd with 180; Carlisle 3rd at 86 and the Cardinals with 76. Colfax Mingo was 5th with 48.
Treynor had four first place finishes with three coming in relays: the 4×100 at 42.70 (Jett Sornson, Cauy Konz, Drew Meyers, Kratyn Dirks). (The Cardinals won the 2A state meet last year with a 42.09); the 4×200 at 1:29.52 (Sornson, Konz, Dirks, Meyers) and the Shuttle Hurdle at 1:00.11 (Brock Casey, Luke Christensen, Dirks, Konz). Konz completed a perfect night with a first place in the 100 meter dash 10.85 seconds.
Also for the Cardinals: Maverrick Kalb was 3rd in the Shot Put (48–00.75); Sornson was 3rd in the 100 (11.37); Christensen was 3rd in the 110 Hurdles (15.68); and Casey 4th in the 110 Hurdles (15.86).
