(Des Moines) After 22 years at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Services Division Administrator, Ed Tormey, will retire March 26.
Tormey began his Iowa DNR career in 2004, serving as the agency’s general counsel for 14 years before moving into the division administrator role in 2018. During this time, Tormey also taught as an adjunct professor at Drake University Law School and was inducted into the American College of Environmental Lawyers in 2017.
An Ottumwa native, Tormey received undergraduate and graduate degrees in history from the University of Iowa before completing his law degree at the University of Iowa College of Law in 1990.
Tormey returned home to Iowa in 2004 after 14 years in Ohio, where he worked at the Cleveland law firm of Thompson Hine LLP and served as an attorney and Legal Services Bureau Chief for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
“Looking back at my time here at the Iowa DNR, I’ve really appreciated being a part of teams that have helped this agency become a better, more effective organization,” Tormey said. “But I will miss the great camaraderie the most, both with my coworkers and the many public and private partners I had the pleasure of working with.”
Tormey currently resides in Indianola with his wife, Connie, and plans on spending more time with his adult children, Erin and Sean, who both live in Wisconsin.
The DNR will select a division administrator following Tormey’s retirement.
