(Iowa City, IA) — Second seeded Iowa survived an upset bid from 15 seed Farleigh Dickinson and advanced in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 58-48 on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes only led 35-33 to start the 4th quarter and that is when Ava Heiden took over the game. The Knights were able to cut the lead to one with 6:24 left and two with 3:24 to go but each time Heiden hit a big shot each time. She finished with a career high 29 points including 12 straight in the 4th quarter — Heiden got all her points inside the arc on 11 of 16 shooting and 7 of 7 from the free throw line.
Rebounding was a huge advantage for Iowa (27-6), beating FDU 47-28 on the glass. Hannah Stuelke had a double double — 13 points and 16 rebounds. Heiden had 7 boards and while Kylie Feuerbach had just one point and was 0 of 5 her threes, she added 11 rebounds.
Farleigh Dickinson (30-5) had their 22 game winning streak snapped and were led by Ava Renninger with 13 points. FDU only shot 30 percent from the field on 18 of 60 shooting.
Iowa now advances to the 2nd round and will face 10th seeded Virginia on Monday, time TBA.
