(Coon Rapids, IA) — Every year, Cal Heydon of Coon Rapids Bayard has moved up the All State team ladder. Third team as a sophomore, last year 2nd team but this year the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association voted the Senior as a first team All State selection.
Heydon more than justified the award — he led the Rolling Valley Conference in scoring at 23.6 ppg; was third in assists at 3.8 per game; 4th in rebounding at 8.8 and 4th in steals at 2.7 per game. Heydon says that the team’s success helped with being named first team
Heydon says it was fun to play this season with his two brothers Ty, a Junior, and Blake, a freshman. Ty was selected Third Team All-State after averaging a double double — 13 points and 11.6 rebounds a game
Coon Rapids Bayard fell just short of going back to the state tournament after falling to Boyden Hull in the Substate finals but Heydon says that does not take away from their 23-2 season
Heydon says getting to 2,000 career points on senior night this year was pretty special
CRB loses two starters — Heydon and Gavin Heiderschiet so Heydon says the Crusaders will be poised to have success next year. Heydon, meanwhile, will turn his attention to track and field — he finished 2nd in the shot put last year. Heydon says he plans on playing baseball for Iowa Western Community College after he graduates.
