(Des Moines) Since 2000, the Lions Club has conducted screenings for kids entering school and even younger ones, from six months to six years old. The Lions Club has found 40,000 kids with vision problems and has helped them get their eyes corrected by referring them to an optometrist. However, the life-changing events need some help.
Allen Zobel, Past District Governor for nine southwest Iowa Lions Clubs, is seeking community-minded members who are available to assist Lions with their established, highly recognized annual KidSight vision screening program. Through this program, Iowa Lions clubs can help identify children in preschool and kindergarten who may be struggling to see clearly.
Zobel says when children are undiagnosed with their vision problems, many are sadly mislabeled as distracted, behind, or misbehaving.
The truth is, they cannot see, and they are compensating through their inappropriate behavior.
Lions screen children for vision problems free of charge. Many daycare centers and local schools participate in KidsSight screenings.
Zobel says the Lions Clubs are looking for volunteers to help with the screenings. He says it takes about one or two days per year for a couple of hours, and the Lions Club provides the training. This KidsSight program has been life-changing for some Iowa families.
If you have any questions, and/or would like to volunteer, please get in touch with Allen Zobel at 712-304-5066 or email him at 46azobel@gmail.com.
