(Guthrie, Center, IA) — Last week, Cody Matthewson announced he would be leaving AC/GC as the school’s Principal and Football Head Coach. On Wednesday night, Van Meter’s School Board approved Matthewson’s new position. He will become the Bulldogs Strength and Conditioning Coordinator; Defensive Coordinator for the football team; Head Coach of Boys Track and PE teacher. Matthewson told KSOM/KS 95 that it was an opportunity that is closer to home
Strength and Conditioning is a passion for Matthewson who indicated that maybe being a principal was not for him. He says that there is a lot to be excited about at Van Meter despite no longer being a head coach in football
Matthewson has coached the Chargers football team for the last 8 seasons and has gone 59-22 for an incredible winning percentage of .728. AC/GC has been to the playoffs 7 times in those 8 seasons, advancing to the quarterfinals 4 times, including 3 in a row. The Chargers did not get the chance to play in the Dome during Matthewson’s tenure which is the only thing left undone. AC/GC went 10-1 the last three years. Matthewson says he is proud of what he accomplished at AC/GC and tried to be more than just a football coach
Matthewson was also the boys track and field head coach at AC/GC but will not be coaching the team this spring — Jacob Lacey will coach both the boys and girls with an extra assistant added to the staff.
