(Guthrie Center, IA) — AC/GC used a strong end of the 2nd quarter to pull away from CAM and advance in the Class 1A boys basketball playoffs winning 65-46 on their home floor Monday night.
The Chargers closed the first half on a 10-2 run and took a close lead to a 9 point advantage in the locker room and added to it in the 2nd half.
Tommy Skram was electric for AC/GC running all over the court, making shots in the lane, hitting some threes, and generally making plays — the senior had 25 points to lead the Chargers. AC/GC shot 8 of 12 from the field in the first quarter to lead 20-10 but CAM came back with three threes in the 2nd quarter from Gunnar Hogiueson, Carson McKee and Braxton Dennis to make it a game. Then Skram took over with 7 points in the quarter plus a three from his younger brother Will Skram to led 32-23.
CAM scored the first 4 points of the 2nd half but Blaize Dorsey hit two triples and Tommy Skram had another 9 points in the quarter and the Chargers led 49-34 after three quarters and it was too big of a lead for the Cougars to overcome.
AC/GC (10-12) was led by Skram plus Dorsey with 16, Will Skram had 11 — 8 in the 4th quarter. The Chargers won without their 2nd leading scorer Joe Crawford who is out for the season with an ankle injury.
CAM (9-14) was led by Dennis with 12, McKee had 10, Collin Bower had just one basket all night and was held to 5.
AC/GC will face #1 seed Coon Rapids Bayard in the district semifinals on Thursday night.
