(Denison) As Super Bowl Sunday approaches and fans prepare to celebrate, the Iowa Traffic Safety Bureau is sending out the message “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.”
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy says Super Bowl Sunday is considered an unofficial holiday, at least in her law enforcement agency’s unofficial capacity.
Trooper McCreedy says the theme for this year’s unofficial Super Bowl Sunday Holiday is ” fans don’t let fans drive drunk. She says in Iowa, 37 percent of the state’s traffic fatalities are related to impairment.
McCreedy says they are trying to get the word out that it is okay to gather and have a good time, but it must be done responsibly. She says, just like a good game plan, people need to establish responsibilities and roles. McCreedy says plan, and find a designated driver or another solution if indeed you are going to drink alcohol.
Law enforcement encourages designated drivers to ensure that those without a plan have a safe way home. Additional information on impaired driving is available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
