(Atlanta, GA) — Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women, leading to one in five female deaths in the U.S. Yet, the CDC has found that only 56-percent of women are aware of this.
Many women are much more concerned about their one in eight lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Cardiologists say it’s important for women to know the symptoms of a heart attack which, in females, may not present as the “elephant on the chest” alert described by many men. The American Heart Association says women are more likely to feel pain in the upper back, between the shoulder blades, or in their arm, neck and jaw, plus nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath.
The AHA is urging women to know the warning signs and to get immediate medical attention.
