(Oakland) The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed to KSOM/KS95 News that an Atlantic woman involved in a two-vehicle accident in Oakland on Tuesday morning has passed away.
The accident occurred at 10:27 a.m. According to the preliminary report, a 2007 silver Hyundai Tucson, driven by Donna Lee Smith of Atlantic, was traveling westbound on Highway 6 at the intersection with Highway 59 when an eastbound 2021 white Buick Encore, driven by Joy Elaine Van Zee of Oakland, attempted to turn northbound onto Highway 59. The two vehicles collided in the westbound lane.
The Buick Encore remained on the highway, while the Hyundai Tucson left the roadway and struck a tree.
Both drivers sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Donna Lee Smith has since passed away.
Van Zee was issued citations for failure to yield and driving under suspension. Authorities say Van Zee’s license was suspended because she was deemed incapable of operating a motor vehicle. The accident is still under investigation.
