Iowa Supreme Court Justice Calls For Raises For Judges
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa Chief Supreme Court Justice Susan Christensen is calling for a pay raise for judges. She says experienced judges are leaving the bench for better paying jobs in the public sector at alarming numbers. She adds the justice system could save about two-point-five million dollars by cutting 60 magistrate positions. Her magistrate overhaul proposal would reduce magistrates from one per county to one per judicial district. Christensen brought the topics up during her Condition of the Judiciary speech on Wednesday.
State Agrees To Pay Woman Shot During Law Enforcement Training
(Des Moines, IA) — The state will pay a woman who shot herself during law enforcement training 600-thousand dollars. The state appeals board approved the settlement on Tuesday. The incident occurred during the first day of a twelve-day firearms training course at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in August 2015. The Peosta woman accused her instructor of negligent training and oversight in the lawsuit filed in 2019. She says she suffers permanent injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder from the shooting.
Man Charged With Attempted Murder In Road Rage Incident
(Spirit Lake, IA) — Authorities are charging Jonathan Oldenkamp with attempted murder for shooting at another vehicle while driving. The vehicle he allegedly shot at was found with six bullet holes on the driver’s side and the person driving was taken to a nearby hospital. The alleged incident happened on Highway 18 near Harley back in May. Oldenkamp was arrested in December and pleaded not guilty to the charges. He’s scheduled for a pretrial hearing on January 26th and could face up to 25 years in prison.
Iowa Man Arrested For Impersonating Health Inspectors
(Cherokee, IA) — Authorities say a man tried to shut down a restaurant while impersonating food inspectors. The alleged incident happened on December 20th at the Little Panda Restaurant in Cherokee. Documents say Jason David Skadeland was picking up food at the time and being belligerent to employees, while threatening to shut the place down. The restaurant is located near the intersection of Maple and Second streets. Skadeland is not employed by the state department that handles restaurant inspections.
Iowa Egg Council Donates Over 300k Eggs To Food Bank
(Des Moines, IA) — A donation by the Iowa Egg Council has the Food Bank of Iowa thankful. More than 300-thousand eggs were donated from the council and local egg producers Versova and Rose Acre Farms. The egg council’s Cracking Hunger program has been providing eggs to Iowa food banks since 2018. The executive director at the Food Bank of Iowa says the organization tries to provide a balance of protein, carbs and nutritious food to its recipients. She tells KCCI the egg donation really helps with the protein aspect.
