(Clarinda) Kylie Meier’s three-point basket in the closing moments propelled Clarinda to a 37-35 victory over Atlantic in a Hawkeye Ten Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.
Addison Wagoner led the Cardinals with 11 points, followed by Miley Wagoner with 9, Maddie Cole with 6, Carson Wellhausen with 5, Meier with 4, and Aylah Johnson with 2.
For the Trojans, Claire Schroeder was the top scorer with 10 points, while Brynn Lamp and Katrina Williams each contributed 8 points. Madison McLaren added 5 points, Kaitlyn Hickman scored 3, and Peyton McLaren chipped in 1.
Clarinda began the game by outscoring Atlantic 9-6 in the first quarter. Addison Wagoner accounted for five of those nine points with a field goal and a three-pointer. In response, the Trojans’ forwards, Brynn Lamp and Katrina Williams, combined for the six points scored by Atlantic.
The second quarter was similar, with Clarinda outscoring Atlantic 10-9, giving them a 19-15 lead at halftime.
At the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals had extended their lead to 28-21. However, Atlantic mounted a rally, outscoring Clarinda 11-5, narrowing the gap to 33-32. Late in the quarter, Atlantic freshman Madison McLaren made a three-point basket, giving the Trojans a brief 35-34 lead. Meier responded shortly after with another three-pointer, sealing the victory for the Cardinals at 37-35.
With this win, Clarinda improved to 7-6 and will play at home against Shenandoah next. Meanwhile, the Trojans, now sitting at 6-7, will host Harlan on Friday night.
