(Exira) One person was killed, and another was transported to the hospital following a fire in Exira Monday morning.
The Exira Fire Department says at 6:41 a.m., Audubon County 911 received a report of a structure fire in an apartment located at 405 S. Carthage Street in Exira. The Exira Fire & Rescue Department and Brayton Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire confined to a single apartment unit. 67-year-old Patricia Richter was located inside the apartment and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A second occupant from the adjacent apartment was evaluated at the scene and transported by Exira Fire & Rescue to Audubon County Memorial Hospital for evaluation of possible smoke inhalation.
Assisting agencies included Exira Fire & Rescue, Brayton Fire Department, Audubon County Sheriff’s Office, Audubon County Emergency Management, state Fire Marshals’ Office, Audubon County Medical Examiner Investigator, Audubon County 911 Communications, and MidAmerican Energy.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
