(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ basketball team opened up a big lead in the third quarter and closed out a 42-33 win over Clarinda in a Hawkeye Ten Conference basketball game on Tuesday night at Atlantic.
Makenna Schroeder led the Trojans in scoring with 12-points including two three-point shots. Zoey Kirchhoff, and Peyton McLaren ended the night with nine points each, and Katrina Williams scored six. Madison McLaren, Brynn Lamp, and Jillian Saathoff chipped in two points each.
Addison Wagoner led the Cardinals with 20-points, Maddie Cole, 3, Aylah Johnson, 3, and Kelby Gray finished the game with two points.
Both teams struggled to find the basket early. The Trojans started off the game on a 6-0 run and led 6-2 at the end of the first quarter. Atlantic outscored the Cardinals 12-6 in the second quarter, and opened up and 18-8 advantage at the break. Schroeder hit a three-point shot, and Kirchhoff, Lamp, Saathoff, and Williams each chipped two.
The Trojans outscored the Cardinals 13-9 in the third quarter raced off to a 42-24 lead in the final frame. Addison Wagoner carried the load for Clarinda in the second half. The 5’6 senior attacked the basket, earning ten free throws, making 7-of-10, and four field goals sparking a 9-0 run at the end of the contest. However, the Trojans large lead was too big of a mountain to climb for Clarinda.
Atlantic Head Dan Vargason was proud of his squad’s defensive effort.
Vargason credited Katrina Williams, and Brynn Lamp for controlling the inside game.
Coach Vargason mentioned Zoey Kirchhoff and Makena Schroeder for their offense.
Atlantic extends its record to 3-2 on the season. Clarinda falls to 3-2. The Trojans host Creston on Friday. Clarinda hosts Glenwood.
