(Lewis) More than 100,000 participants are expected to head out into the field this weekend for the first gun season. The first deer shotgun season runs from December 6 through December 10.
John Lorenzen from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources office in Lewis, appearing on the DNR Report on KSOM, states hunters are expected to harvest 55,000 to 60,000 deer this season. Lorenzen says there is snow on the ground throughout most of the state, which should help hunters see and track deer.
Lorenzen says that, as of now, 28,000 deer have been harvested this fall across the early muzzleloader, archery, and youth seasons.
Lorenzen reminds hunters to be safe while hunting. It is required to wear a 100-percent solid blaze-orange vest as a minimum. Know the locations of the rest of your hunting party, and make safe shots.
The second shotgun deer season runs from December 13 through December 21.
