(Des Moines) The Des Moines Police Department says NE 56th Street is currently closed in both directions between NE 23rd Avenue (Easton Boulevard) and NE Metro East Drive due to a car versus train accident.
According to the press release, a southbound vehicle, driven by a 33-year-old woman, slowed down as it neared the railroad crossing and then drove onto the tracks while a train was approaching. The crossing features signage and flashing red lights, but it lacks crossing arms.
The vehicle only sustained minor damage, and the driver declined medical treatment at the scene. There were no injuries reported for the crew of the Iowa Interstate Railroad train.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies are actively investigating the incident. The roadway will remain closed until the train has been inspected, cleared for movement, and the scene has been fully processed. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes until the road is reopened. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
