(Atlantic) The Trojans are bringing back an experienced girls’ basketball team after a successful 18-7 season last year, along with some talented newcomers.
Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason welcomed 22 players to the first day of practice earlier this week. The roster consists of four seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and nine freshmen. Vargason highlighted three seniors he expects to provide strong leadership this season. Senior Makenna Schroeder averaged 11.0 points per game and shot 30 percent from behind the three-point line, making 42 three-pointers. Senior forward Katrina Williams averaged 10.12 points per game, with 163 rebounds. Zoey Kirchhoff averaged eight points per game and 49 steals.
The Trojans must fill the shoes of four-year starter Paytn Harter, who led the team in scoring with 16.56 points per game. Harter is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,444 points.
Coach Vargason mentions two freshmen who have been impressive in the early season practices.
Coach Vargason says they will not be able to find people to replace Harter’s shoes. He says instead they are going to change the way they play.
The Trojans scrimmage West Central Valley on Tuesday and open the season on Friday, November 21, at home against Treynor.
