(Guthrie Center, IA) — Hawarden West Sioux will go to the UNI Dome in Class A as they beat AC/GC in the Quarterfinals 24-14 on Friday night at Charger Stadium.
It looked good for AC/GC on the opening kickoff when Joe Crawford took it at the 1 yard line and raced 99 yards for a TD to make it 7-0. Crawford made a great cut back to the middle of the field inside the 5 to dodge the last couple of Falcons trying to bring him down.
West Sioux would answer on their opening drive of the game, moving down the field with runs from Braylon Lopez and short passes. QB Blake Wiggins finished it with a 20 yard TD pass to Gavin Gerritson — the extra point was blocked and AC/GC held a 7-6 lead.
The Chargers went 3 and out on their first possession and West Sioux started at midfield and Lopez ended the drive with a 7 yard TD at the 1:39 mark of the first quarter to make it 13-7.
AC/GC got their groove going, using Joe Crawford in motion and mixing up their run plays. Their drive went into the 7:05 mark of the 2nd quarter when Crawford found the end zone again on a 13 yard run to make it 14-13 at the half.
West Sioux took the ball to open the third quarter and the Falcons went to a double wing, double wideout set on one side and Lopez ran behind all those blockers for runs of 28 and 20 yards. That gave West Sioux and 1st and goal and Lopez punched it in from 3 yards — a 2 point conversion made it 21-14.
AC/GC started their next drive at their own 20 but it stalled and a 4th and 7 fell short. West Sioux took over at their own 40 and moved into the red zone. A Lopez TD run was called back on holding and then a bad snap lost 20 yards. The drive took up time though and a quick punt moved the Chargers inside their own 20.
AC/GC started to move the ball — they converted a 4th and 1 but on 3rd and 4, Kendrin Van Beek broke through the line for West Sioux and brought down Crawford for a 6 yard loss. On 4th and 10, the Chargers pass fell incomplete and they turned it over on downs at midfield. West Sioux made it a 2 score game when Jonathan Flores kicked a 30 yard field goal to make it 24-14.
