(Carroll Co.) An Audubon man facing charges in connection with a deadly shooting in South Dakota has died from what authorities say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Carroll County Tuesday morning.
According to reports, first responders were called at around 9:15 a.m. to a field near 300th Street and Mahogany Avenue for a report of a man with a firearm and suicidal thoughts. When deputies arrived, they found 58-year-old Lance Allen Meaike of Audubon deceased near his vehicle. Authorities are investigating his death as a suicide.
Arrest warrants had been issued last Friday out of Lawrence County, South Dakota, charging Meaike with first-degree manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The charges stemmed from the June 12 shooting death of 59-year-old Larry Petersen, also of Audubon, at a cabin outside Lead, South Dakota.
