(Fort Dodge, IA) — The state cross country meet starts today with races in Class 2A and 3A. The top three teams and top 15 individuals earn all-state honors.
The 3A races are in the afternoon — the girls will run at 2:00 pm with Atlantic Senior Katrina Williams in the field — Williams ran a personal best 19:52.11 at regionals. Harlan’s team ranks 12th in the state and Head Coach Zach Klassen says the goal is to get into the top ten. Glenwood has two runners competing — Junior Grace Berglund ranks 10th in 3A and Senior Caitlin Hebel will also run. Pella is the favorite in the team competition.
The 3A boys race is at 2:45 and Mason Betts who is out for cross country for the first year will race for Atlantic. The Sophomore ran a personal best 16:19.88 in districts. Jeffrey Gross of Harlan also qualified into the field. Gilbert will be the boys favorite followed by Pella.
The day will start with the girls race at 10:30 am — Treynor will be one of the favorites to get on the deck. The Cardinals are ranked #3 — West Marshall is #1 and Mid Prairie #2. Treynor is led by Freshman Lilly Miller who is ranked 11th individually; Sophomore Madalynn Kerkmann is 19th. Shenandoah has two runners competing — Sophomore Lilly Mather and Freshman Ava O’Rourke.
The Class 2A boys is at 11:15 am. Red Oak is ranked 10th and qualified as a team led by #6 Junior Emmanuel Grass. Sophomore Hayden Heitbrink is ranked 16th. Shenandoah has two runners in the field — Freshman Mason Sells and Junior Carter Buttry. Chariton is the team favorite.
