(Harlan) The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a a structure fire at approximately 4:00 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 3rd Street and Court Street in Harlan. Upon arrival, crews found the residence full of smoke and it was reported that three people were inside.
Tragically, two occupants were located inside and they were brought outside where medical care was rendered. Ultimately, they were taken to the Myrtue Medical Center where they were pronounced deceased. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of family.
No emergency responders were injured during the incident and the third person was not home at the time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s office and the Harlan Fire Department, in coordination with the State Fire Marshal’s office. The Shelby County Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Harlan Fire Department, Westphalia Fire Department, Avoca Fire Department, Shelby Fire Department, Shelby County EMA and Shelby County EMS.
