(Griswold, IA) — In 8 man action on Friday night, Audubon visits Griswold — its the district 9 opener for both teams. The Wheelers were not in the Radio Iowa Pre-Season poll but after dismantling Remsen St. Mary’s 64-18, they are now — ranked number 7.
Audubon beat up on the Mustangs despite their starting quarterback being hurt — Carson Wessel played in the game and had two carries for 39 yards but it was Aiden Kjergaard who started at QB and had 7 carries for 198 yards and 4 TD. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks says Wessell could have played if it was absolutely necessary but he says its nice to know he has some interchangeable parts in Kjergaard and Wessel
Last week, Audubon’s defense forced four turnovers and two of them went for touchdowns — Mason Kasperbauer had both on a scoop and score and a pick 6. Birks says its an emphasis for his defense and something they have done after a couple of years ago
Orm Voight and Jorgen Noawatzke each had interceptions last week for Audubon. Paxton Beane some some playing time in the 2nd half at QB and had 94 yards on 11 carries and 1 TD. Audubon only had to throw 2 passes all game long.
Friday they face Griswold and Birks says that the Tigers have an extra game under their belt and they are doing some good things on offense
The Tigers are coming off a 28-20 win over Stanton-Essex thanks to 149 yards rushing combined mostly between three players — QB Wyatt Silk, Colton Frieze and Alex Rasmussen. Dain Laverty had a big game with 5 catches for 143 yards and 2 TD. Silk was 7-12 passing for 182 yards and two scores. Rasmussen had a big game in a week zero loss to East Mills with 123 yards and 3 TD and Head Coach Seth Lembke likes what his skill guys have done so far
Silk won the quarterback spot in pre-season after Bode Wyman graduated. Lembke says he took a step forward from the first game to last Friday
Lembke knows the challenge in front of him — facing a tough Audubon team but he says playing East Mills and Stanton-Essex and getting a couple of games of experience will help prepare for the test against the Wheelers
Audubon is 1-0 and Griswold is 1-1.
