(Underwood, IA) — The Underwood football team built an early lead last Thursday against Harlan and held on late for a 33-29 victory. It was the first time that the two teams had ever faced on the football field despite only being 30 miles apart. With the win, the Eagles moved up two spots in the Class 1A poll from #8 to #6 while the Cyclones moved out of the Class 3A poll. Head Coach Nate Mechaelsen knows the tradition of the Harlan program but at the same time he is already started to move past it
Mechaelsen had said early in pre-season that there was inexperience in his receiving corps but they stepped up against Harlan. Garrett Luett threw for 284 yards and 2 TD with no interceptions. Tayden Hull had 4 catches for 144 yards and caught both TDs, Ryker Adair had 7 receptions for 99 yards, Hudson Ross had 3 catches for 30 yards and the receiver who had the most returning experience Kyle Sub was held to just a couple of catches so Mechaelsen was overall pleased
The Underwood defense held Harlan to just 60 yards on the ground and Mechaelsen says that was a big reason why the Eagles won the football game
Next up for Underwood, they travel to Interstate 35 this Friday.
