(Area) — The weather in the month of July was wetter than normal and we could see more rains in August. That’s according to State Climatologist Justin Glisan who says there was about 9 inches of rainfall in Iowa during July which is more than double what is expected. Glisan says this is the second wettest July in the last 150 years only behind 1993. However, Glisan says that Southwest Iowa was behind the rest of the state in terms of rainfall
Glisan says that July’s temperature was about two degrees above average, one degree above in SW Iowa and that was thanks to the third week in July where the dew points were higher than earlier in the month.
For Atlantic, the high temperature for July was the 30th at 93 degrees; the lowest temp was 55 degrees on July 13 and the average temperature was 9/10 of a degree above average but rainfall was dramatically higher says Glisan
Looking ahead, Glisan says there could be more heat and more rain early in August
Long term, Glisan says there is good news for farmers. Things should start to dry out at the end of August and projects good weather for the start of the harvest season.
