(Ankeny, Iowa) Women in agriculture are playing an increasingly influential role, helping drive innovation, strengthen local economies, and support the nation’s food supply. According to the USDA, there are currently 1.2 million female farmers in the U.S., making up 36.3% of all producers—individuals actively involved in decision-making for farming operations. These women manage 407 million acres of land and contribute $222 billion in agricultural sales.
In Iowa, nearly half of the farmland is either owned or co-owned by women. Additionally, 33 percent of all farm producers are women.
On July 31, the 19th year, the Iowa Women in Agriculture will meet for a two-day conference at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny, Iowa. A pre-conference tour begins on July 30, concluding with a reception featuring guest speaker Ashley Hunter of Purple Ribbon Beef in Britt.
Deb Schuler, a past president from Atlantic, says women across the Hawkeye State gather for networking and educational opportunities. She says the theme this year is sowing our story beyond the farm gate.
Thursday is filled with guest speakers, including Ruth McCabe, an agronomist, and Kristin Stein, a grain market adviser, as well as breakout sessions covering “lending and leadership in times of uncertainty, farm succession, and inviting others to join your ag story.” just to name a few of the featured speakers at this years conference.
Schuler mentions that a southwest Iowan will receive an award at this year’s conference.
The pre-registration fee is $75.00; the fee at the door is $100.00. To register, go to www.iowawomeninag.org.
