(Area) The Fourth of July is a busy weekend for people on the water, and with several drownings already reported across the state, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources wants to remind everyone that there are steps you can take to help prevent drownings.
John Lorenzen, with the DNR, offers this advice. Wear a life jacket.
Lorenzen also suggests everyone take swimming lessons.
Do not consume alcohol while operating a boat.
Lorenzen said you should also make sure your boat has a throwable flotation device, a whistle, and a fire extinguisher. He added that it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings to avoid potential hazards.
You can hear more from John Lorenzen on the DNR Report on KSOM Saturday morning at 7:30.
