(Atlantic, IA) — After two losses on Friday at the John Stephens Classic in Creston, the Atlantic Softball team rebounded on Saturday with two wins — a 12-2 blowout over Lenox and one of their better wins of the season, 2-1 over #11 Bondurant Farrar. That got their record to 12-8 on the season with a busy week coming before them. Two big keys for Atlantic the rest of the season will be getting Lila Wiederstein back into the line up full time and getting solid pitching. Junior Zoey Kirchhoff and Sophomore Peyton McLaren have handled the bulk of the innings but Sophomore Brynn Lamp has been used as well to make a terrific threesome. Kirchhoff says they make it work
McLaren says there is no ego involved with this threesome, they learn from one another, and feed off each other
Both Kirchhoff and McLaren rely on the same pitches — a drop ball and a screw ball but McLaren says there are some differences in how the pitches look
Combined, the three pitchers have a 2.21 ERA and they only allowed 3 total runs in Saturday’s two games. The wins also broke Atlantic’s 4 game losing streak and gets them into a better mindset going in another busy week which starts with tonight’s doubleheader at Kuemper Catholic. Kirchhoff says they will be ready for whatever is thrown their way
After the DH tonight against the Knights, Atlantic will host Clarinda, coverage on KS 95. Then its hosting Shenandoah Thursday and then they play in the very competitive Fort Dodge Tournament Friday and Saturday.
