(Oakland, IA) — Riverside might be the most underrated softball team in the state — the Bulldogs continue to beat team after team and on Monday night they rolled past AHSTW 10-0 in 4 innings.
The Bulldogs got started early — with one out in the bottom of the first inning, Sophia Fenner had a hard hit to short that Halle Goodman had to backhand and Fenner beat the throw for an infield single. Madison Kelley followed with a bloop just over the mitt of Goodman for another hit and then Peyton Schafer drilled one to the base of the wall in left field for a 2 run double to make it 2-0 Riverside. They weren’t through — after AHSTW starter Sienna Christian struck out Adaline Martens — Sydney Somers hammered one past Goodman for a base hit that would score pinch runner Meg Haines and Somers would score two on two errors by the Lady Vikes on throws. It was a four run first inning for the Bulldogs.
They added to their lead in the third inning — Peyton Schafer got a leadoff walk, Martens blooped one into right for a hit and Somers brought then both home with a 2 run single to make it 6-0. Somers would later score with Lilli Reed at the plate who reached on an error — she would score on a RBI single by Kaycie Perkins who would score on a RBI single by Fenner. It was 9-0 Bulldogs.
Somers would end the game in the bottom of the 4th after Schafer and Martens got back to back leadoff walks and Somers drilled one in the gap in left center to put the 10 run rule into effect.
Schafer meanwhile got some help from the defense when Kennedy Wyman opened the game with a single and on Sienna Christian’s base hit, tried to score from first base but the relay from right field got Wyman at the plate for the out. Shafer would then strike out the next 4 batters in a row. Christian got a 1 out single in the 4th and Clara Pace would follow with an infield single but Schafer got a strikeout and ground out to end the threat. The freshman pitcher threw a 4 hit 4 inning shutout, striking out 7.
For AHSTW, Christian was 2-2, Pace was 1-2, and Wyman was 1-2.
For Riverside, Somers was 3-3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs and 4 RBI. Schafer was 1-1 with 2 walks, a double and 2 RBI. Sophia Fenner was 3-3 with a run, a RBI and a stolen base.
