SATURDAY NOTES
No One Does It Like Quentin Nauman
No high school athlete in America has ever done what Quentin Nauman just accomplished. Nauman, a junior at Western Dubuque, became the first prep runner in the country to run a sub-1:50 800 and a sub-4:00 1600 in the same meet. He ran 1:49.41 in the Class 3A 800 in the morning and came back in the afternoon to run 3:59.50 for the 1600. Both, of course, are meet records and the all-time best in Iowa and his 1600 time is the second-fastest in the nation this year. For those who are curious, a 3:59.40 1600 converts to a 4:00.99 mile. Caleb Ten Pas of Des Moines Christian finished second in the 1600 in 4:03.53. He had the previous all-time best at 4:05.14.
Nauman now has eight state championships with another year to go.
Nathan Miller Isn’t Bad, Either
While Quentin Nauman clearly would be the athlete of the meet, Center Point-Urbana’s Nathan Miller had a pretty salty weekend, too. Miller capped it with a come-from-behind anchor carry that gave his team a victory in the Class 3A 4×400 relay in 3:17.61, breaking a record that was set 16 years ago. Miller, who’s headed to Bradley for college, also came from way back to anchor a victory in the sprint medley relay and won the 400 and 400 hurdles.
Hurrying Over The Hurdles
Tay Seals and Koby Higginbotham set a sizzling pace in the Class 3A 110 hurdles. Seals, a sophomore at Clear Creek-Amana, won the race in 13.58, a meet record and the second-fastest time in state history. Higginbotham, a senior at Knoxville, ran 13.77 to finish second. That puts him fifth on the state’s all-time list. Seals also anchored Clear Creek-Amana to a record-setting victory in the shuttle hurdle relay.
Fast Times All The Way Through
Fans who stayed to the end saw some of the best times in state history in the final event of the meet. Cedar Falls moved into the No. 2 spot on the state’s all-time list when it won the Class 4A 4×400 relay in 3:13.35. That race produced three other times in the top 10. Des Moines East is now No. 7 at 3:15.36, Muscatine moved up to eighth at 3:15.47 and Johnston slipped in at No. 9 with its time of 3:15.35.

SATURDAY NOTES
Doubling Up
First they ran the final two legs in helping ADM, Adel win the Class 3A shuttle hurdle relay. Then Josi Dufoe and Elise Coghlan returned to the track and went 1-2 in the 100 hurdles. Running side by side, Dufoe finished in 14.50 and Coghlan was right behind in 14.55. ADM won the shuttle relay in 1:01.15, a meet record and No. 7 on the state’s all-time list.
Championships By The Dozen
Tipton’s Noelle Steines finished her final high school in a spot that has become all too familiar over the years – in first place. Steines won the Class 2A 1500 for the second straight year for her fourth championship of the weekend and 12th overall. It was her third title in the 1500, having won the 1A title for Calamus-Wheatland in 2023. Steines, who will run at Bradley next season, also won the 800 and 3000 this weekend and anchored the winning distance medley relay.
Hey Mom, I Won, Too!
Thirty years after her mother won a state championship in the 1500, Cedar Falls freshman Charlee Gall claimed a title over her own. Gall, the Drake Relays champion in the event, ran 4:29.87 to win the Class 4A race. That puts her at No. 10 on the state’s all-time list with plenty of time in her career to move up. Gall’s mother, Sarah Gray, won the Class 3A 1500 for Cedar Falls in 1995.
Sixteen Events, Sixteen Championships
Perfection, they name is Ally Darter. The Dubuque Hempstead wheelchair athlete competed 16 times in the state meet and won her event all 16 times. Darter topped off her career with victories this weekend in the 200, 400, 800 and shot put. Her next stop is the University of Arizona, where she’ll play wheelchair basketball.
These Eagles Can Really Fly
Pella Christian is developing quite a sprinting tradition. The Eagles won all four sprint relays this weekend and captured the three individual sprints as well. Rachel Kacmarynski (100), Meredith Van Wyk (200) and Bailey Vos (400) all repeated individual titles. The Eagles also won repeat championships in the 4×200, 4×400 and sprint medley and added a title in the 4×100. And they won the team championship, compiling 80 points.
Wolves Gobble Up Relay Titles
No one has dominated relay events the way Waukee Northwest did this year. The Wolves son six of the seven relays – something no other school has ever done – and ran away with the team championship, finishing with 101.5 points. Northwest capped the meet with victories in the 4×100, 4×400 and shuttle hurdle relay. That came after they won the 4×800, sprint medley and distance medley earlier in the meet. No other team had won more than four relay championships in a single meet. It’s the third straight team championship for Northwest. Waukee won five straight time titles before Northwest started its streak.
Wahlert Continues Relay Success
Dubuque Wahlert Catholic is used to winning relays at the state meet, but the Golden Eagles had to go down to the end to get one this time. Wahlert won the Class 3A title in the final event of the meet, the 4×400 relay. They now have won 26 state relay championships since 2015 and have one at least one relay win in every state meet but one in that span.
