(Anita, IA) — It was as close as you can get. The Class 1A District golf tournament came down to the final few holes and the CAM boys golf team advanced to the state tournament by one penalty stroke in one of the closest tournaments of the year.
Five teams at one point were tied for the lead with the top three teams advancing to state — CAM, Sidney, Sigourney, Mount Ayr and Woodbine. The Cowboys dropped a couple of strokes on the last couple of holes to fall out of the tie. That left four teams but the final golfer for Mount Ayr — Dylan Graham — had to take a penalty stroke because of a lost ball. According to his teammates, it was picked up in the fairway by a non player. Nevertheless, the penalty stroke stood and so CAM, Sigourney and Woodbine finished in a three way tie. Woodbine won the district title going to the 6th player score with Sigourney 2nd and CAM was 3rd.
For Chase Jahde, last year’s state runner up needed the team to qualify because he finished third in the individual standings behind the defending state champ Keith Thompson of Hamburg and his younger brother Hayden Thompson of Sidney. Only the top two individual golfers not on a qualifying team would make it to the state tournament and Jahde was not one of them.
Scores for CAM: Chase Jahde +1, 72; Coby Venteicher +8 79; Braxton Dennis 81; Madden Cary 84; Chase Spieker 89; Austin Eblen 90.
Carson Kelley and Cal Pryor had low rounds for Woodbine with a 78; Xander Johnson and Cody Dickinson each shot an 81.
For Sidney, Thompson shot a -1 71; Michael Hensley 82; Carter Jorgenson 83; Kolt Payne 85
Riverside finished in 7th place in the team standings — Nathan Smith led the Bulldogs with an 80; James McCready 81; Peyton Amdor 86; Taven Moore 89; AC Roller 90; Austin Zimmerman 92.
Individual scores: Ty Rardin of Nodaway Valley finished tied for 11th with a 79; Hogan Hook of Griswold was tied for 24th with an 82; Gage Sesker of Southwest Valley shot a 92.
