(Greenfield) May 21, 2024, is a day Greenfield residents will never forget. At around 3:42 p.m., the violent twister roared through the town center, leaving a path of damage behind before exiting south of the Fairgrounds. Five people died, and many others suffered injuries.
This Wednesday, May 21, marks the first anniversary of the devastating tornado. Carol Woosley, Greenfield Chamber of Commerce Office Assistant, says the day called the “Commemoration” is a reflection on the devastating tornado that struck this city of 2,000 people.
The day starts with breakfast at St. John’s Catholic Church from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Recovery resources services will be held throughout the day in the courtyard and the downtown square.
Lunch will be served at the United Methodist Church starting at 11:30. At 3:25, a reflection and prayer service will be held at the gathering place one block south of the square. At 3:42, the church bells rang, and one minute of silence was the official time the tornado came through Greenfield.
A community supper will be held in the courtyard from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., a commemorative program will recognize the people and groups that helped out in the past year and the future. All activities and meals are free.
Woosley says the recovery and rebuilding have been phenomenal. “For our town and size, we’ve done quite well. We have come a long way, but we are getting there.”
