(Elk Horn, IA) — Exira EHK Baseball has a new head coach this season and it is the Athletic Director Tom Petersen’s son Trey Petersen running the team while Tom is coaching the softball squad. Trey inherits a team that is young and short on numbers — just 14 players out for baseball and 5 of them are 8th graders so they will need young players to grow up in a hurry. Petersen likes his pitching coming into the season led by Senior Alex Hansen (4.14 ERA last season, 30 strikeouts in 25 innings) plus Senior Josh Nelson and Freshman Austin Rasmussen
Exira EHK must generate more offense this season — they hit just .218 as a team last year on their way to a 6-12 record. Hansen hit .300 and is the leading returning hitter. With only two seniors, the Spartans will be young but Petersen likes some of his young talent
Petersen is a young coach — he is still in college and he will be coaching his younger brother Thomas and his older brother Tyler is an assistant so there are Petersens everywhere but that gives the Head Coach Trey some comfort
Exira EHK will open their baseball season on Tuesday, May 20 at AC/GC.
