Iowa Experiences Above-Average Precipitation and Temperatures in March, Says State Climatologist

(Des Moines) State climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan reported that Iowa experienced above-average precipitation and temperatures throughout March. Dr. Glisan highlighted three major weather systems that impacted the state during the month: two blizzards and a severe weather outbreak on March 14. These systems contributed to six to seven-tenths of an inch of precipitation above normal levels, with the exception occurring in the southwest quadrant of the state.

Glisan pointed out that northwest Iowa recorded above-normal snowfall, which is noteworthy given that the meteorological winter months had the fourth-lowest snowfall on record. Regarding temperatures, the state saw averages four to eight degrees higher than usual, with the southwest corner averaging four and a half degrees above normal for March. As we look ahead to summer, the forecasts suggest slightly warmer and drier conditions for June, July, and August.

Dr. Glisan mentioned that it is still too early for definitive predictions and that more information regarding the summer outlook will be available next month.
