(Des Moines) Severe weather has caused a massive pileup crash in Iowa. State police say at least 24 vehicles, including semi-trucks and pickups, were involved in the collision on I-35, one of Iowa’s major highways.
There’s no word yet on injuries, but authorities say nearly a hundred people had to be evacuated from the area. Due to the winter weather, dozens of other crashes took place between Tuesday and yesterday. Portions of central and northern Iowa received several inches of snow during the blizzard.
Social media photos showed trucks and cars involved in a pileup on Interstate 80 westbound near Newton, about 35 miles northeast of Des Moines.
Road conditions are much improved today—however, rain and snow return to the forecast later today, and overnight.
A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 9:00 p.m. for the west central Iowa counties of Monona, Crawford, Carroll, Guthrie, Audubon, Shelby, and Harrison.
