(Norwalk, IA) — It looked good for AC/GC in the first minute of Wednesday’s Regional Final against Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont. The Chargers scored the first two baskets of the game — the Rockets then went on a 9-0 run and never looked back from there, running away with a 64-30 win to advance to the 2A State Girls Basketball Tournament.
AC/GC could never solve the EBF zone that forced the Chargers to shoot outside shots and the peach just would not go in the peach basket. The Chargers finished the game 2-26 from three point land — they have only shot 25 percent from three point land on the season so the Rockets forced them to chuck it from the cheap seats. Cam Richter and Stella Largent had no room to operate inside against three Rockets that are 6 foot tall or taller.
Meanwhile, the threes were going in for Eddyville. Molly Shafer had 11 points in the opening quarter and the Rockets led 18-8. In the second quarter, EBF used another 9-0 run on threes from Ava Eastlick, Kate Schafer and Kaylee Helm to continue building the lead. Helm averages 8.5 points a game but finished with 20 points to lead the Rockets which included 6 threes on the night. It was 38-15 at the half, 52-26 at the end of three quarters and it got to running clock midway through the 4th quarter.
Eddyville (24-0) shot 51 percent from the field for the game and were 10-21 on their three point shots. Their starters played pretty much the entire game with Molly Shafer putting in 16 points, Kate Shafer had 14, Ava Eastlick had 10 and Chloe Lyon added 4.
AC/GC (22-2) was led by Stella Largent with 9 — Shay Lemke was held to 5 and Cam Richter had just 4 points. The Chargers finished with their first 20 win season in school history — that is with Adair, Casey, and Guthrie Center all in one school. Lemke is the team’s only senior and 4 Charger starters will return.
