(Coralville, IA) — The 2025 Iowa Girls State Wrestling Tournament got started on Thursday with the Class 2A schools taking the mat at the Xtream Arena. Lewis Central had 8 wrestlers compete this year and still have 6 alive. Three are competing in the front end and three are in the back end but all six are guaranteed to finish in the top 8.
At 120 pounds, Avaeh Smith is the two seed at 120 and won by tech fall over Summer Fliss of Spencer in the first round and then beat 7 seed Izzy Duncan of Raccoon River NW 7-0 in the Quarterfinals. She will face #6 Trudy Haag of Ankeny (39-6) in the Semifinals.
At 125 pounds, #1 seed Emerson Gregg cruised into the semifinals with a fall in 47 seconds over Addyson Bowers of DCG and then pinned #9 Ellie Hancock of Raccoon River at 1:18. In the semis, she will face #5 Anna O’Reader (32-3) of West Delaware.
At 135 pounds, #7 Kassidy Fiala won in the first round over Elizabeth Thomas of Pella at 3:01 but lost to #2 Cadence Bushong at 4:46. Fiala rebounded to get a takedown with 5 seconds left to beat Clair Hynek of Prairie Cedar Rapids 8-5. Fiala is now 44-9 and advances through the blood round into the consolation 3rd round.
At 140 pounds, Lindsay Trotter went 0-2, losing 13-1 MD and fall in 13 seconds — the sophomore finishes 34-28.
At 145 pounds, defending champ and #1 seed Mahri Manz won by fall at 1:49 over Hannah Moser of Spencer and then got by Allie Van Der Molen of DCG 9-1. The Senior is now 47-0 and will face #12 Macie Graves (31-8) of Cedar Falls in the semifinals.
At 155 pounds, #9 Kalen Jo Westerfield won in the first round at 1:18 over #8 Hayleigh Forster of Dubuque Senior. Westerfield lost to the #1 seed Haylee McGrew of Ankeny at 1:42 but in the consolation round, the junior guaranteed herself a medal with a pin in 55 seconds over Teryn Vander Beek of SE Polk.
At 190 pounds, #9 Madison Wright lost at 3:52 in the first round but won by fall at 1:55 over Amaiah Brooks of CBAL. Wright then won in the blood round by fall at 2:22 over #7 Cambrie McLloyd of Clinton.
At 235 pounds, Katie Schroeder lost in 21 seconds to #1 Ella Brown of CR Kennedy and then lost to Lillian Miller of CBAL at 3:28 to finish her sophomore season 9-14.
For CBAL, Ellie Johnson went 1-2 — the freshman lost in the first round 18-6 to LeMuna Gurisho of Des Moines Public Schools. Johnson won in the first round of the consolations by fall at 4:25 over Daniela Salinas of Denison Schleswig but lost 8-7 to Alyssa Wheeler of Carlisle. Johnson’s season ends at 46-9. Amaiah Brooks lost to the number one seed at 190 Halley Beaudet of DCG in 46 seconds and then lost to Wright of LC to finish the season at 27-26. Lillian Miller lost in the first round at 235 at 3:15 to Emelia Reyes but pinned Schroeder of LC at 3:28 but lost to Kinley Jimenez of South Tama 7-5 and her season ends at 25-13.
CBTJ had just one wrestler compete — Jackie Garcia was a 14 seed at 115 pounds and she provided one of the big upsets of the first round, beating the three seed Allison Hoefling of Hinton by fall at 4:07. Garcia, however, lost in the Quarterfinals by fall at 3:32 to #11 Olivia Hallam of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Garcia then lost in the consolation round by fall at 5:06 to Josephine Bond of DCG. The Senior’s season ends at 22-12.
