(Lewis) Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen urges ice fishermen to check the ice thickness before.
Lorenzen says that for ice safety, the minimum thickness guide states that four inches of ice is safe to fish on, and five inches of ice is safe to drive an ATV on. However, it states that those numbers are only for new, clear ice. He says the ice we have now is not considered new, so take precautions.
