(Winterset) A Warren County man tragically lost his life after his vehicle broke through the ice at Badger Creek Lake in Madison County.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 55-year-old Jeffrey Gene Poush of Cumming, Iowa. Authorities reported that Poush was preparing to ice fish and drove his vehicle onto the frozen lake. The ice gave way approximately 115 feet from shore, and the car became fully submerged in water 7-8 feet deep.
Poush managed to free himself from the submerged vehicle and the lake. However, he later succumbed to his injuries. His body was discovered around 10:20 a.m. Friday morning, and was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for an autopsy.
No foul play is suspected, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Central Iowa Underwater Search & Rescue, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Madison County Ambulance, and the Madison County Medical Examiner’s Office.
