(Washington D.C.) U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) is introducing the Transnational Criminal Organization Illicit Spotter Prevention and Elimination Act to impose criminal penalties on cartel “spotters” who monitor border patrol operations in support of human and drug trafficking.
Despite their critical role in smuggling, particularly in fentanyl trafficking—the leading cause of death among Americans aged 18-45—there are currently no specific laws against them. “I’m putting cartels on notice – the era of open borders is over,” Ernst stated. She emphasized that Republicans are focused on restoring order and providing border patrol with essential tools to protect Americans.
Arizona Republican Representative Juan Ciscomani (Sis-co-manee) is introducing similar legislation in the House. He noted the urgent need to target “spotters” who help evade law enforcement. The new act will amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit: – transmitting information on law enforcement activities to further a federal immigration crime. – destroying or damaging government devices used for border control. – using firearms in alien smuggling crimes.
