(Harlan, IA) — It was two different games on Tuesday night — the girls were a blowout win for the Cyclones while Glenwood hung on to beat Harlan on the boys side to earn a split.
For the girls, it was a one sided affair with Harlan (3-2) running away with an 82-32 victory. Molly Swenson had set a school record 10 made three pointers in their last game but after hitting two triples early, she cooled off and was the only starter not in double figures. Aubrey Schweiso and Kenzley Bruck each had 20 points, Grace Albertsen had 18 with 13 coming in the first half and brinley Van Baale added 10.
Albertsen and Bruck really asserted themselves in the paint and Glenwood (1-4) really was outmatched. Albertsen dominated the inside while Schweiso hit three threes in the first half to dominate the outside. Swenson finished with 9 — Harlan shot 53 percent from the field and was 8-21 on their threes. Glenwood was led by Maggie McChesney with 10.
In the second game, Harlan would lead most of the first half thanks to something they don’t do often — shoot the three. The Cyclones had only hit 7 three pointers in their first two games but hit 5 in the first half and finished 8-28 from beyond the arc. Koebe Klassen had been 0-4 on his three pointers and only averaged 1.0 ppg but he hit two three pointers in the first quarter and Harlan led 21-17. Klassen and Dallas McDowell each hit a three in the second quarter and Harlan maintained their lead until Ayden Gibson — the Rams leading scorer — started to get on track. Gibson had 9 points in the second period and Drew Schroeder added 6 more on drives to the hoop. Glenwood would go on a 20-2 run from midway in the second quarter to midway in the third quarter. The Rams built a 41-32 lead at the half with Wilson hitting a long three at the first half buzzer.
The second half was pretty much the Gibson show and Harlan (1-2) desperately trying to come back. At the end of the third quarter, Glenwood had built their biggest lead 59-45. Harlan got the lead down to 7 in the 4th but Glenwood (5-0) put back at 10 Gibson hit 4-5 from the free throw line down the stretch. Gibson finished with a game high 33 points, Jack Johnson had 15 and Schroeder added 10.
For Harlan, it was a breakout night for Kobe Klassen with 22 points. Dallas McDowell and Ben Leinen each had 15 and Jozef Reisz had 9. The Cyclones had to play without Senior Caden Bruck one of their starters who is out until after the winter break.
