(Lewis) The second gun season for deer starts Saturday and runs through December 22. Deer hunting may look slightly different for some Iowa hunters due to an outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease in deer or EHD. John Lorenzen from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says from conversations with hunters it has been a slower season with lower deer numbers.
One reason for the low numbers is that there have been more than 25,000 cases of EHD so far this year, making it the second-highest outbreak ever in the state. So far, EHD has been detected in 94 of Iowa’s 99 counties. He says EHD does not pose a human consumption risk.
