(Council Bluffs) A late-night fire in a residential home on Wednesday claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman and left another occupant hospitalized.
The Council Bluffs Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 2007 7th Avenue at 11:18 p.m. following a report of a structure fire with a possible person trapped inside. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke emanating from the rear of the house.
A victim was removed from the basement and immediate advanced life support was administered. The victim was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Fire crews on scene located the fire in a basement bedroom. The fire was extinguished and fire investigators were called to the scene. The house was occupied by four other people, one of which sustained smoke inhalation. The other three occupants were uninjured.
The victim, 70-year-old Peggy Lee Rayner, was pronounced deceased at Mercy Hospital. Fayth Rayner is being treated at Mercy Hospital and is in stable condition.
The investigation is being conducted by the Council Bluffs Fire Marshal’s Office. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
