(Remsen, IA) — Audubon ran straight into a brick wall on Thursday and that wall was the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks who ended the Wheelers season 61-20 in the 8 Man Quarterfinals.
Audubon never got the offense on the tracks, got bit by the turnover bug and ran into a big beast of a defensive lineman named Collin Homan.
Both teams went 3 and out on their first possession — but it was Remsen St. Mary’s who would score on 7 of their next 8 possessions while the Wheelers could only manage 6 points in the first half. Landon Waldschmitt broke the ice with a 38 yard TD and after a Carson Wessel interception, Waldschmitt hit Collin Homan for an 18 yard TD pass. Another 3 and out for Audubon and another Waldschmitt TD on a 12 yard run. At the end of the first quarter, Wessel got picked off again — the first two interceptions were by Keaton Harpenau — but this time Aaron Olsen knocked down a pass on 3rd and 8 to force a punt. It was Homan who pinned Audubon back to their own 6 and after three plays, the Wheelers kicked again only the boot by Hayden Larsen went straight up in the air and once on the ground, took a massive Remsen bounce and ended up as a 3 yard kick. From the 9, Harpenau ran it in to make the score 26-0.
Waldschmitt would connect with Brady Wurth for a 30 yard TD to make it 34-0 and finally Audubon got on the board as Aaron Olsen broke one around the left end and scampered down the sideline for a 59 yard TD run — prior to that play the Wheelers only had total offense of 1 yard. The Hawks would answer quickly — Braxton Kneip would bust one up the gut for a 44 yard TD. After an Audubon fumble — their third turnover of the half — Waldschmitt hit Kneip on a 23 yard TD pass at the 1:31 mark of the 2nd quarter to make it 46-6 and put the game into running clock.
Audubon would get a couple of scores in the 4th quarter — back up QB Aiden Kjergaard had a 20 yard TD run and the Sophomore would find Senior Mason Steckler on an 18 yard TD pass but the Hawks were too much in a 61-20 win.
Homan for Remsen St. Mary’s seemed to live in the Audubon backfield, he would also catch 3 passes for 42 yards and 2 TD and had 8 touchbacks on kickoffs and for good measure booted an extra point in the 2nd half. Waldschmitt had 13 carries for 128 yards and 2 TD plus threw for 91 yards and 4 TD.
For Audubon, Olsen had 13 carries for 72 yards and a TD. Carson Wessel was held to 22 yards rushing and was 3-13 passing for 3 yards and 3 INT. Adam Obrecht had 8.5 tackles.
Audubon’s season comes to an end at 10-1, Remsen St. Mary’s is now 11-0 and will play Bishop Garrigan of Algona in the 8 man semifinals.
