(Atlantic) The large number of entries on Cass County ballots caused some issues for the Absentee Ballot voter team on Tuesday, forcing the crew and Cass County Auditor’s Office to work into the wee hours of the morning. Cass County Auditor Kathy Somers explains…
This slowed down the process because the ballots had to be opened carefully by hand. This problem was followed by another: the sticky seal catching on the secrecy portion or, in some cases, the actual ballot itself.
Somers said they had to slow down the machine’s counting speed. In a nutshell, one team member had to open the envelope carefully, and the second member removed the ballot from the envelope and dealt with the sticky substance so as not to damage the votes. By 2:30 a.m., the team completed the process of 2,990 absentee ballots at a slow rate of speed; Somers says they buckled down and finished the job; all of the votes were counted accurately.
There were 9,655 registered voters in Cass County, and 75.48 percent, or 7,288, turned out to vote.
