(Oakland, IA) — Riverside and Lynnville Sully will meet for the first time ever tonight in a Class A first round match-up of the high school football playoffs, coverage on KSOM.
The Bulldogs are the 2 seed out of District 7 and are led by Junior Jaxon Gordon with 1,649 rushing yards which leads Class A backs and is 5th in the entire state. Riverside Head Coach Darrell Frain says Gordon has tremendous vision and can just see the hole to run through
Lynnville Sully’s defense has actually shown they are better against the pass then the run — the Hawks have 18 interceptions as a team — Junior Dawson James leads the team in tackles with 61 and 13 TFL but regardless Frain says they can make plays
On offense, the Hawks like to throw it which historically they have not done. Senior QB Lannon Montgomery has seen the majority of reps and has tossed for 878 yards and 7 TD but 7 INT. Whatever Lynnville Sully will do, Frain says his defense must be ready
Riverside will have the edge in travel — Lynnville Sully will have to make the 2 1/2 hour bus ride across Interstate 80 to get to Oakland and Frain says there’s another reason they have home field advantage
Lynnville Sully Head Coach Mike Parkinson is well aware of Gordon’s talents — he is impressed with his vision and more importantly his patience but he says you can’t just focus on one guy
Parkinson says there have been a number of standouts on their defense starting with DE Terran Gosselink who has 22 tackles for a loss
On offense, the Hawks rely on two Juniors to catch the ball — Jack Bowlin has 29 catches for 538 yards and 5 TD and Matthew Mintle has 24 catches for 256 yards and 3 scores but they aren’t the only ones who can catch the pigksin
Parkinson says anything can happen and Lynnville Sully will need to limit mistakes and do the little things well to advance
